Victor Wang - 2010 Hertzog Concerto Competition Winner

Victor Wang - Hertzog WinnerHertzog Winner 2010 Victor Wang began playing the flute at the age of 9. Since then, for most of middle and high school, he has studied flute with Sophia Gibbs Kim at the Eastman Community Music School. He is currently a freshman at Yale University, where he continues to pursue music as an extracurricular activity. His major is undecided, although he plans to pursue a field related to science or engineering.

At Webster Thomas High School, Victor was principle flute in the school’s wind ensemble and symphony orchestra. In addition, he was a member of the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra for one year and the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra for two years. Victor was also a member of two flute choirs, one of which he founded at his school. Victor participated as principle flute in numerous All- county, Area All-State, and Conference All-State bands and orchestras, most notably serving as principle flute in the 2008 Conference all-state Symphonic Band. Additionally, in 2010, he played both flute and piccolo in the National High School Honors Orchestra.

Throughout high school, Victor participated in numerous competitions, and as a result, he was named winner of the 2008 Rochester Flute Association’s high school performance competition, the 2009 Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra annual concerto competition, and the 2010 David Hochstein Recital Competition. In addition, Victor was named runner-up in the 2008 David Hochstein Recital Competition, the 2009 Empire State Competition, and the 2010 Rochester Philharmonic League Young Artist Auditions, and he also received an honorable mention in the 2010 Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra concerto competition.

Victor would like to thank his teachers, parents, and friends for their support in all his endeavors, musically and otherwise. He would also like to thank everyone at the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes for providing him this incredible opportunity to solo with a professional orchestra.
